Aquamarine
Haddam, CT

Joel Sweet found this aquamarine at a small prospect we called the flat rock prospect because of a large flat rock that covered one end of the pegmatite when we first found it. The aqua is double terminated with one end still buried in quartz and feldspar. It is a light green color, very glassy, and 5 x 2.4 x 2.7 cm. The whole specimen measures 14 x 10.5 x 4.0 cm. A minor dark green apatite rests alongside the bottom of the beryl, which is also surrounded by black schorls and mice. A very typical pegmatite assemblage.

Despite the fact that this piece was collected more than 10 years ago, it has still not been properly cleaned! It may need only soap and water, but it may also benefit from a dip in oxalic acid. What is amazing is how perfect the beryl is. It has two small dings near the termination, but also a wonderful pyramidal face near the termination. These extra faces are a special feature of some Haddam, CT beryls.
