Galena on Dolomite
Sweetwater Mine, Viburnum Trend District, Missouri, USA

The galenas on the specimen are surprisingly bright when you consider the old North Star Minerals label that comes with it states it was mined in August of 1989. It is surprising how few octahedral galenas I see, compared to cubic crystals. This one has both. The top cube is not broken, but it does have a contact in one corner where dolomite crystals broke it. It is amazing they came out with damaging the galena...it actually adds a lot of interest. It is also great to see cubes and octahedrons on the same piece, presumably formed at the same time. 4.2 x 4.5 x 3.5 cm and without damage.
