When I bought this piece, I just thought of it as an azurite and malachite combination. When I looked at it more closely with a hand lens, I was pleased to see the malachites are all pseudomorphs of azurite. What puzzles me is why some of the azurite is still azurite while the rest has been altered to malachite? It does not appear to be a case of a waterline, because there is no horizon I can discern. I was talking to a friend and he told me that sometimes managanese oxides can cover and protect azurites. Maybe that is what happened here! At any rate, this is a nice piece, without damage, and striking contrasting colors of blue, green and brown. 7.7 x 3 x 1.7 cm.
