Kinoite and Fluorapophyllite
Christmas Mine, Gila County, Arizona, USA

Kinoite is named after Father Kino, a Jesuit missionary with an interesting history centered around the native people of Sonora, Mexico. It is a shockingly blue mineral and a silicate (or sorosilicate). It is interesting to me that it appears to occur from only one locality outside of the U.S. (in Japan). Some of the best specimens ever found come from this locality, the Christmas Mine in Arizona. This sample is full of terminated crystals to about 1 mm which are imbedded in clear fluorapophyllite. With a loop or under the scope, the crystals are very photogenic. The piece measures 4 x 3.2 x 1.7 cm. The blue color is from the copper component of kinoite.
