The best of these specimens from Fujian in China have lustrous quartz crystals. On this piece, the smoky quartz has a matte finish...very little luster. On the other hand, this piece is much larger than most specimens, and it is almost perfect (there is one contact on one small quartz crystal in back). Also, there is a very good reason for the matte finish on the quartz crystals: all of the white you see is hyalite opal <u>which fluoresces bright green</u> (see the uv photo below). Cool! This is not all that unusual on pieces from this area. On the other hand, it is not that common, either, and this is the largest and prettiest example I have seen.
